NUTRITIONAL
COUNSELING

Nutritionists work with patients to make sure they eat properly during
treatment. Nutritionists monitor the patient’s weight, and nutritional
status. Nutritionists may provide patients with recipes, vitamins, and
nutritional supplements, etc. to improve their nutritional status. By
providing a nutrition plan tailored to each person, the Welch Cancer
Center hopes to improve success rates by maximizing the effectiveness of
treatment by reducing the risk of malnutrition. Malnutrition is a major
risk to all patients diagnosed with Cancer. Aggressive identification
and treatment of nutrition related symptoms can stabilize or reverse
weight loss in 50 to 88% of oncology cases. Nutritionists attend four
years of college, then usually take part in a one-year internship. The
American Dietetic Association registers Nutritionists who have passed a
professional examination.
